Costa Coffee say that 1,650 staff may be made redundant

Famous cafe and coffee shop chain Costa has said that 1,650 staff are at risk of losing their jobs as it looks to cut costs after the Coronavirus covid-19 pandemic.

The chain told staff today (3 September) that it has started consultations which could impact its roles.

Neil Lake, managing director for Costa Coffee UK and Ireland, said: “Today’s announcement to our store teams was an extremely difficult decision to make.

“Our baristas are the heart of the Costa business and I am truly sorry that many now face uncertainty following today’s news.

“We have had to make these difficult decisions to protect the business and ensure we safeguard as many jobs as possible for our 16,000 team members, whilst emerging stronger ready for future growth.

“As a proud member of the UK high street, we remain committed to the role Costa plays in supporting the economic recovery of the country, but today I want to say a huge thank you to all of our team members that are affected by this announcement and we will be supporting you throughout this process.”Coffee/sandwich chain Pret a Manger axed 2,800 roles from its shops last weeks after another casualty of the pandemic became apparent. Chief Executive Pano Christou said the coronavirus pandemic “has taken away almost a decade of growth at Pret”

Costa Coffee has over 12 shops in Harrow including Pinner, Wealdstone, Stanmore, North Harrow and Harrow Town Centre.  At this time it is not known if any of the stores will close or where staff may lose their jobs.
